Gundam! (Any season)

#1 Postby ThatGuyNamedJoe » Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:28 pm

I have recently been watching various seasons of Gundam (Gundam 00 and Build Fighters Try). If you've never heard of it, Gundam is a Japanese Anime that began in 1979 and often is about giant piloted mecha called Mobile Suits. The only season I know of to break this trend is Build Fighters Try where they fight in virtual arenas with model kits.

actually there is the series before 'Try' that was just called "gundam build fighters" which will provide you with back story for GBF Try.
If you want to see where it all began theres an OVA that came out before the other 2 called "Gunpla Builders Beginning G"

i prefer these over the standard gundam animes cuz they're a lot lighter & less dramatic
however i am watching the newest series called "Iron-Blooded Ophans"

nice to see another gundam fan :gobon:

I liked G Gundam back in the day. Its the only one I really remember watching and I think ms 08 was on around that time too but I wasn't as interested in that one. Gundam build fighters sounds a lot like LBX I'm gonna have to check it out

Iron-Blooded Orphans is pretty amazing. It follows some of the 00 tropes, which in general fits most Gundam series tropes. You have the main character, a capable orphan soldier. The optimistic but inexperienced princess. The cool guy who helps out or guides the main character. ETC.

But what I've seen in terms of mech action, it's very much inline with 08th MS Team, War in the Pocket, and the first half of Star Dust Memories. Grounded tanks with legs, machines needing to be refueled and repaired between conflicts, the strain of survival grinding on everyone. I really love that stuff.

I like G Gundam for different reasons on why I like 08th MS Team. G Gundam is like a wacky martial arts series, it very comical but that intensify its serious moments.

08th MS Team is my gold standard for 'good' UC Gundam material. For some reason, I still have yet to see 0080.

Iron-Blooded Orphans really does have the small-scale, backwater conflict feeling of 08th, so I think I will like it a lot. The other Gundam series tend to lose me when they get into their WHAT IS WAR? and Newtype psychic stuff.

I watched about half of G no Reconguista, but didn't finish it. It reminded me a lot of Eureka Seven. The mech designs were solid, so it's a good sign that the same guy is working on Iron-Blooded Orphans.

As for 00, I hope we never see the pretty boy power ranger Gundam team format again. :arg18-blast:

Any Keshi collector would know what a gashapon is. And possibly the most popular gashapon around are the SD Gundams. Recently there was a revival in that line called SD Gundam NEXT that features better articulation for the small guys.

Recently, my work got a few of these small things in. After looking at the parts, I realized "That's about the size of a Glyos port".

They don't have much flex, but it's a tight fit that holds.

Not only holds, but the aesthetic is very cool. I think they blend well with Glyos.

I definitely want more non-Gundam characters, such as the Virgo, as Gundam faces can get quite complex and distinct.

I only know the names of a few of the shows, but while I was stationed in Japan I was able to play in one of the Gundam Pods, I have no idea what it was saying or the instructions of what each control did so once the game started I had to do a very quick run through by hand, and though I don't think I used any special moves I surprised many of the other players on my stile, which mostly consisted of elbow checking their gundams into buildings or mountains. But as for the products, well they had this one gundam action figure set that you could switch out arms, legs, torso, and heads with other figures and use your own creation in an arcade machine, each figure stands about the size of a Barbie doll and it's kind of fun switching parts to find a combination that best fits your stile. Though the one thing I always found funny about the figures in japan is that you have to find ones that say joint action or your pretty much buying a statue. Wish I would have gotten a picture of a few of the pieces I say in the local mall, they had one that stood about 5 feet tall and this was model you could buy, if you wanted to spend over 1,000 dollars.

Buildings are destructible if I remember correctly, not only that, but the shoulder check lets you get one last dash in before the thrust gauge needs to cool down.

Man, Gundam Age and that Gage-ing gimmick was pretty cool. Too bad it was limited to only Gundam Age. As soon as that show left, so did the arcade machines an all the interest to them.

It would be so cool to have one, but considering that Japan, living space is sort of a luxury, I doubt anyone would buy it any time soon as well.

Good to see the Gundam series being released/re-released on DVD and Blu-Ray for the western market. I've been watching Z on Blu-Ray and the quality and subs are solid... still bummed that they couldn't get the opening and ending themes. (If you watched it on Crunchyroll a couple of years ago, it's basically that version.)

The exciting part is that they also did ZZ and X, and will be releasing V in the next couple months. I really didn't think we would ever get a proper release of those outside of Japan.

Speaking of which, I saw the premiere of IBO season 2 today, and in addition to loving the Mobile Suits, I think this season will be great.
