Looks cool. I keep considering modeling some stuff but I don't trust my ability at measuring the pegs/holes to make things connect right... maybe when I'm feeling better.

Project's not dead. Just on a temporary hold while I (slowly) get the funds together for a 3D printer.

Yeah that's why I got my friend Ren helping me with that. He's a freaking 3D genius, especially when sizing stuff for printing. Basically the thing to know is the pegs are 4mm long and in diameter. Due to limitations of 3D printing, it's nigh impossible to do an honest-to-god Glyos peg, but you can still make something that fits in the holes and vise versa.

Here's a vision of the future. We're a long way from having a viable prototype. Here's a 3" solid figure I had printed from Shapeways a some months back that I just recently painted to get an idea of how the first run colorways will appear. Decided to go with the Hades Force color scheme because it is one of my favorite Glyos colorways. Please forgive the gritty texture. Shapeways nylon materials, even when polished, are pretty damn rough. Also my hands have been super shakey lately for reasons I'd rather not get into.

Looks really cool!

If this is released, will the Hades blue be closer to the one used in the Onell colorways?

Yeah. This is just the closest approximation I could get with the paints I currently have on hand. When I get my printer and get the models to be able to behave with it, next step is to get a library of paints that closer match Glyos colors.

Maybe you could ask Onell itself? ;)

Well, that's the plan eventually. Right now I don't wanna bug Matt with this because at this point I'm just some nobody with a pipe dream and shallow pockets.

All things considering, though, I did manage to make a semi-good approximation of the teal using just blue, white, and green. Just needed to be a bit brighter.

Maybe try adding more white?

Eh, I'll bug Matt to see if he has any color swatches or whatever when I've come far enough in the project to be taken seriously.

OMG this gives me chills. My 3D guy Ren recently got himself a printer and managed to make this head out of PLA filament

Image Image

It's still a little rough, but nothing an emory board can't fix. But you can barely see any stepping at all! Just to be on the safe side, I'm asking that he print one out in ABS and try acetone vapor smoothing it a little bit so we can have a comparison.

Also I am so jazzed how well the horns and his goatee spike came out! OMG!

More progress!

My 3D wizard pal Ren is still working on tweaking/slicing the models to print decently. He just sent me this pic this morning. He tried printing all the pieces in one go and it kind of caused them to peel off the bed and get a little messed up in the process, but the end result still shows we're pretty damn close to having viable prints! For now, we plan to print the pieces one at a time and see what happens.

Actually yes. Infact I have plans for an accessory set with a separate bare torso with scythe arms that plug into his shoulders, as well as a bone blade hand a a biological gun hand.

The Surgeon is back on track, bitches!!!
Got my 3D Printer!
Once I decipher this device's mysteries, I will start producing prototype figures for sale!

To whoever saw the post I posted last night which is now deleted, I'm sorry. I have clinical anxiety which I usually have it under control with meds and hypnotherapy, but there are times it just grips me and I get obsessive and freaked out. This happened yesterday while attempting to get the printer working properly and pretty much in a span of 12 hours drove one of the four or five guys at Micro Center tech support into telling me to give up after calling them at least ten times.. And I come to the realization that learning this machine will be harder to operate than I initially assumed and have a LONG way to go before I can get to Spaced Out's level of awesomeness.

I got a friend who did 3D printing for a living for a while, and has the patience of a saint, who is going to help me master this machine.

To any 3D slingers out there, any input would be highly appreciated.

And I hope my embarrasing anxiety fueled post didn't drive anyone off from any interest in my project.

Don't worry about it, I'm sure its really frustrating and disheartening right now but you obviously care about making your Surgeon figure a reality and I'm sure you'll get there with a bit of perseverance!

I'm looking forward to seeing you post a picture of a perfectly printed cube soon. :)

Thanks. If I conquer the cube, I can conquer the model.

So, question. I seem to be having LOTS of trouble with ABS plastic, but alot of success with PLA.

Problem is you can't vapor smooth PLA like Musbuh and Spaced Out do, so you can see stepping, but it's not very obvious since my printer is quite awesome.

Would you guys buy prototypes if there is stepping?

Well, it's a rough process of trial and error but I'm still making progress. The pieces are still coming out kinda f****, but they are improving each time.

I personally prefer the smooth look of ABS vs PLA stepping, unless the texture could be incorporated into the design for aesthetics, Id be hesitant to jump on buy a ton of stuff like that. However if the resolution where such that it didn't detract from the figure, Id consider it a non issue. I get kinda picky about 3d printed toys.

from the pic above, looks like you went ahead with the ABS? Or is that the PLA?

Its PLA. And there is a solvent that can smooth it, I discovered. I'm real close to freaking throwing my printer out the window, though. I can't get it to print a damn thing properly, ABS or PLA. And this is supposed to be a top-of-the-line printer.

If the printer is the same one in your photo, the Ultra 3D printer, I can tell you that unfortunately it is not going to be suitable for what you want it to do. Yes, there's always going to be trial and error with 3D printing for the immediate future, but you would need to step up the level of printer you're working with for reliable glyos compatible pieces. No matter what you're going to need to do some finishing on your prints, but something like a Mojo 3D printer would better suit your needs and is only a few hundred more than the model you're working with.
